On 10th January 2025, Health Action in South Sudan (HASS) officially launched its Public Health Awareness Campaign (Radio Talkshow) through a live program aired on Door FM in Tonj Town, Tonj South County, Warrap State. The talkshow featured Clinical Officer Gabriel Maruon as the main panelist, focusing on the urgent topic of Cholera — a recurring public health threat in many parts of South Sudan.
During the engaging session, Officer Maruon comprehensively addressed the causes, modes of transmission, symptoms, treatment, and most importantly, preventive measures of cholera. He emphasized the critical role of hygiene practices in combating cholera outbreaks. Listeners were advised to adopt essential habits such as proper handwashing techniques after using the toilet, washing fruits and vegetables with clean water before eating, and ensuring safe drinking water is used in every household.
This radio talkshow marks the first of twelve interactive sessions planned under a six-month partnership between HASS and Door FM. The campaign will continue until 5th July 2025, with two episodes scheduled every month. Each session aims to disseminate vital public health knowledge to rural and urban communities, using local radio to reach even the most remote areas.
HASS Executive Director Dr. Wol Wol Dut reiterated the importance of accessible health education, noting that “radio remains a powerful tool for empowering communities with life-saving information.”
Speaking from Tonj, Adup Anyuat, HASS Tonj South County Programs Coordinator, applauded the initiative, saying, “This campaign is a milestone in community health education. It is bringing vital information directly to the people’s homes and encouraging everyday actions that can save lives.”
The Public Health Awareness Campaign is entirely funded by HASS founding members as part of its commitment to improving community health through awareness, behavior change, and public engagement.
